I wasn't happy with the picture and I began sandpapering it.
The dust from the sanding remains and somehow, with the grain of the canvas emerging, it begins in some small way to look okay.

This is the background

The farmer and the cow.

Another experiment, the background is really lovely, painted canvas that has been cut up and reassembled. The farmer and cow are plaster of paris, cut into the background and painted. I'll try this again one day.
